Canoe Days Out

Oxfordshire - River Thames - Mapledurham to Sonning

This page was submitted by Keith Day (E-mail this submitter)
How to get there - We had camped overnight at Mapledurham. If you are doing this as a day trip you may be better starting at Pangbourne which is on the A 329 north west of Reading. For those with SatNav the postcode is RG8 7DU.

You will need to leave a car or be picked up at Sonning (oposite the French Horn. For those with SatNav the postcode is RG4 6TN.

Get a map with driving directions to start or end (enter the postcode of your starting point at A)

Suggested Launch Site - If you have camped at Mapledurham just launch over the bank.

If you are launching from Pangbourne I have used the car park of the Swan pub to be best but parking is very limited and you should move your car off site as soon as you can. There is a suitable car park next to the station.

General Description - This trip starts in the country and then gets increasingly urban (though still pleasant) as you come through Reading before returning to the country side.

From Mapledurham the trip is 8 miles & three locks. Add 2 miles and a lock if starting from Pangbourne.

This trip is the 7th in a series that cover the River Thames from Cricklade and follows directly from the trip from Wallingford to Mapledurham.
